Raw vs. Heat-Treated Flintknapping Stone
Some flintknapping material is offered raw, heat-treated, or in both forms. Treatment can change how a particular stone works, but results vary by material and piece.
Raw material
Raw means the stone has not been sold as heat-treated. Some materials in the Mayan Knapping catalog can be worked raw; check the individual description.
Heat-treated material
Heat-treated means the seller identifies the material as having received heat treatment. Choose this option only when the product or variant specifically says Heat Treated.
Before ordering
- Confirm the selected variant.
- Check the form: whole rock, spalls, flakes, slab, or preform.
- Check the lot weight and approximate dimensions.
- Ask before ordering if treatment is not stated.
